India is a big country with a huge area and each area has a pin code assigned to it. A big exercise was done by the Indian post office and the government of India, in assigning the pin codes to all the areas in India. A systematic approach was followed in achieving these feet. First, it started with identifying the zones, states, then districts, Municipalities, and then the wards. The first two numbers in the Pincode signifies the state.

The Pincode is mainly used by the Indian post office or any other courier system in order to identify the delivery location of the package. The customers can also use the Pincode finder tool on the Indian postal department to locate the addressee location and then can mention it in the letter. Then the customer can book the speed post or registered post. The status of both these types of posts can be known using the speed post tracking tool available on the postal website.

The Pincode system was introduced in India in the year 1972. There are a total of 9 PIN zones and out of them, one zone is specially assigned to the Military of India. The below table shows the significance of each digit in the Pincode number.
